Time Is Not On Your Side

It is a statement of the obvious that the Rolling Stones are hit making machines. Many of their songs offer catchy, unforgettable lines that stick in a listeners head all day. And while they know a whole lot about music, they are wrong on one message; at least as far as disaster cleanup goes.
Time, is most definitely not on your side.
This brings us back to our original subject of hits. Here’s a hit for you. How would you like to take a double…even a triple hit on your financial responsibility for your home disaster clean up? Because if you don’t take care of things in a timely manner; such a hit is not only feasible, but nearly a guarantee. If you thought it was tough working with an insurance company, just wait until they hear you say the words “This happened about a month ago…” Their reply will stick in your head longer than the chorus of “Honky Tonk Woman”.
It then behooves us to do a little research and answer a few questions. Why does time matter, and what can I, as a homeowner, do to help speed the process of disaster recovery along?
Many homeowners assume that because they can no longer detect puddles, the water must have evaporated and so they choose not to take immediate action. Sadly, though, very little of that water actually evaporates. In fact, it is fairly safe to consider your home one giant sponge. Nearly everything your home is made of is going to either saturate to capacity, or channel the water to some porous substance that will.
Gravity is going to pull it toward the lowest places it can reach. It will run under cabinets and vanities. It will head for the walls and hide behind baseboards. Sheetrock will suck up water like a soda straw and hold moisture for weeks and weeks. Water will drip down walls and ceilings and cause catastrophic damage to rooms on lower levels of your home. Water will also fall through the seams in your hardwood and Pergo flooring, soaking into underlayment and subfloor. Rugs and carpets are obvious water retainers, and carpet pad is literally a floor length sponge. And insulation? You don’t even want to know. But floodwater DOES NOT EVAPORATE. It sits in those saturated materials and waits for something to happen.
At that point, it will cause more and more structural damage to your home. It also astronomically elevates your odds of developing home and health destroying mold, for which you will require additional insurance coverage that you may or may not have. Either way, your adjuster will be a very unhappy individual.
